Tai Mahal’s Structural Issues Emerge: Cracks, Wall Plants, Fading Quranic Verses and Water Damage Threaten Monument

Concerns have been raised about the Taj Mahal’s condition after heavy rains in Agra caused cracks and damage to the monument’s walls and floors. According to the Times of India, Shakeel Chauhan, a leader of the Tourist Guide Federation of India, pointed out that Quranic verses on the doors near the main dome have faded, and the semi-precious stones used in the designs are wearing out. Some floor stones in front of the royal mosque have chipped, and there are signs of damage on the main mausoleum and dome.

However, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) dismissed major concerns, saying that the structure is still sound and no serious problems have been found. They also stated that maintenance funds for the Taj Mahal are regularly checked, and no significant issues have come up.

On September 19, Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav criticized the Yogi Adityanath government for not properly maintaining the monument. He shared a viral video showing a plant growing from the dome, warning that its roots could cause cracks. Yadav also mentioned the possibility of rust in the metal urn on top of the dome and leaks in the dome itself. Despite the rain, ASI officials confirmed there is no major damage to the dome’s roof.
