‘Ramayana: Legend of Prince Ram’ to Hit Indian Screens After 31 Years; Premieres on Oct 18th

The iconic animated film Ramayana: The Legend of Prince Rama is set to make its theatrical debut in India on October 18, 2024. The film, which will be released in four languages—Hindi, English, Tamil, and Telugu—has long been hailed as one of the finest cinematic adaptations of the ancient Indian epic. Fans have eagerly awaited its return to Indian screens, following its original international release.

On September 19, Geek Pictures India, the production company behind the film’s re-release, shared a teaser and poster across social media platforms, igniting widespread excitement. Their post read, “A tale as old as time, and forever alive in every heart. Ramayana: The Legend of Prince Rama is coming to theatres across India in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, and English on October 18!”

Although Ramayana: The Legend of Prince Rama made its first appearance at the International Film Festival of India in 1993, it faced significant obstacles in reaching Indian audiences. The film was banned for three years due to concerns over its Japanese production and animated portrayal of Hindu gods, which coincided with the sensitive political and communal tensions following the Babri Masjid riots in 1992. Conservative Hindu groups had voiced objections, arguing that the animated depictions of deities posed a potential threat to India’s religious fabric. The ban was eventually lifted, allowing the film to air on Doordarshan, but its theatrical release remained elusive—until now.

Adding to the film’s resurgence is the creative influence of screenwriter V. Vijayendra Prasad, known for his work on Baahubali, Bajrangi Bhaijaan, and RRR. His involvement has brought renewed attention to the Indo-Japanese collaboration, ensuring that the film appeals to contemporary audiences.

“The Ramayana in anime is a groundbreaking testament to the strength of Indo-Japan collaborations,” said Arjun Aggarwal, co-founder of Geek Pictures India. “This fresh, dynamic portrayal of the timeless legend of Ram will undoubtedly resonate with audiences across all regions and age groups.”

Directed by Koichi Sasaki and Ram Mohan, with music composed by Vanraj Bhatia, Ramayana: The Legend of Prince Rama was originally released in 1992 as a joint venture between India and Japan. Over the years, it has garnered a cult following, cementing its place as a beloved retelling of the ancient tale for both new and old generations.
